Big Tech Surveillance Could Damage Democracy

    Get PDF
Data is often called the oil of the 21st century. The more tech companies know about their users, the more effectively they can direct them to goods and services that they are likely to buy. The more companies know about their users, the more competitive they are in the market. Custom-tailored capitalism is what has made Google, Facebook, Amazon and others the richest companies in the world. This profit incentive has turned big tech into a competitive field of mass intelligence gathering. The better and more comprehensive the data, the higher profits will be. But this business model – what I consider spying machines – has enormous potential to violate civil liberties. Big tech is already being used abroad to enhance the power of repressive regimes, as my work and others’ has shown. While it is not presently a direct threat to U.S. democracy, I worry that the potential for future abuses exists so long as big tech remains largely unregulated

Quality Assurance in the Buyout Phase of the Commercial Sector of San Francisco

    Get PDF
The “buyout” phase in terms of construction management is a transitional phase in construction that is integral to the overall success to a construction project. When done properly it can lead to a smooth and efficient construction phase, and if done poorly can lead to major setbacks of all variety. Quality Assurance measures are a great way to ensure that this process is done in a complete way so as to avoid the negative effects of a poorly executed project buyout. As technologies such as BIM (Building Information Modeling) grow the buyout process has become more involved and exact. Technologies add to what can be done during this phase of construction and greatly increase its efficiency while a landscape of increasingly complex contractual relationships add nuance and difficulty to each project. This paper seeks to combine new knowledge with compiled research in order to determine working guidelines to a successful project buyout. Knowledge from the industry was gathered through interviews with a project manager working in the San Francisco area in order to gain a firsthand look at how certain aspect of quality assurance have helped the project buyout process and how they could be improved further

    Nonprofit Georgia: Geography

    Get PDF
This pamphlet summarizes statistics on the nonprofit sector in Georgia, assembled and analyzed by a Nonprofit Studies Program research team. The focus of this second report in the "Nonprofit Georgia" series is the geographic distribution of Georgia's nonprofit resources. Numerous tables and exhibits report on the distribution of public charities and foundations by geographic area, and compare this to the distribution of population and income in the state. Public support and government grants to charities are analyzed by geographic region, as is the geographic distribution of grants by Georgia foundations. Analysis is based primarily on 990 and 990-PF forms filed by Georgia public charities and foundations in 2000 and 2005. This report is a part of ongoing research on public charities and foundations in the state of Georgia, made possible through a generous grant from the Wilbur and Hilda Glenn Family Foundation. Existential Therapy in Intercultural Western-Thai Therapeutic Relationships

The purpose of this study was to identify specific challenges that Thai clients may experience in the psychotherapeutic process, and identify ways to overcome those barriers using existentialist therapy. Research questions were: 1. Is existential psychotherapy effective with Thai clients to assist them with mental health issues? 2. What challenges arise in the psychotherapeutic process when a Western therapist works with a Thai client, and what strategies can overcome those challenges? 3. How can the therapist help develop the Thai client’s sense of self-awareness, so the client continues to examine their life on their own, ultimately leading to no longer needing professional therapy? The study was a qualitative, multiple-case, narrative inquiry conducted in Thailand with Thai participants and a U.S. researcher. Participants were three Thai female university students at a liberal arts university. Data collection consisted of recording individual participant psychotherapeutic sessions supplemented with therapist notes of those sessions. Analysis involved a search for categorical themes that united the therapeutic experiences of these individuals. The results of the case studies showed significant themes from the existential therapy in terms of the need to establish trust, work with the initial lack of knowledge about therapy, identify and deal with specific challenges facing Western therapists working with Thai clients, and reveal the depth of existential understanding. It was concluded that existential therapy is useful in assisting Thai clients gain greater holistic healing from traumatic experiences.

Conical scan impact study. Volume 2: Small local user data processing facility

    Get PDF
The impact of a conical scan versus a linear scan multispectral scanner (MSS) instrument on a small local-user data processing facility was studied. User data requirements were examined to determine the unique system rquirements for a low cost ground system (LCGS) compatible with the Earth Observatory Satellite (EOS) system. Candidate concepts were defined for the LCGS and preliminary designs were developed for selected concepts. The impact of a conical scan MSS versus a linear scan MSS was evaluated for the selected concepts. It was concluded that there are valid user requirements for the LCGS and, as a result of these requirements, the impact of the conical scanner is minimal, although some new hardware development for the LCGS is necessary to handle conical scan data
